Mother’s Day Ideas

Mother’s Day is just around the corner (apparently it’s this coming Sunday here in Australia) and if you’re getting a panic on about what to buy (if buying is necessary) here are some ideas …

A bottle of wine. Well, that’s my solution to every gift giving problem. Head into a local, independent wine merchant, ask some questions and pick out something your mum won’t have seen before.

Check out some of the daily deals sites and see if they have anything your mum would fancy. For example, Living Social currently features discounted cupcakes (most suitable for southern suburbs mums) and a dessert tasting plate for two in Stepney.

For a very South Australian gift, FruChocs have something to suit all price points … from $4 to $75. You can shop online or visit one of the FruChoc stores in Glynde, McLaren Vale or Hahndorf.

If your mum is anything like mine you cannot go past a good cookbook. Mum recently received Jerusalem by Ottolenghi (not from me, from a house guest) and is as happy as the proverbial pig in mud!

There are, of course, plenty of events on. Onyx in North Adelaide is running a brunch, the National Wine Centre is hosting a lunch and countless wineries will have something special on.

And last but not least, you could do some baking and put together a high tea.  Perhaps these RaspberryChocs Brownies could make an appearance …

Giveaway: Haute Cuisine Double Passes

A new French film – about food, bien sûr, will be released nationwide on 25 April.

Haute Cuisine (its French title is Les Saveurs du Palais) is the story of a Périgord chef, Hortense Laborie, who is appointed the President’s personal cook.

It is based on the story of President Mitterand’s private chef, Daniele Delpeuch, and the film was shot on location in Paris, at the Elysée Palace, and in regional France and even Antarctica.

You can check out a trailer of the film over at Transmission Films.

Eating Adelaide has five in season double passes to give away. They are valid at participating cinemas Australia wide.

The competition is open to all Australian residents: just enter using the form below.

And good luck!

Nepenthe Twilight Tasting and High Teas

Nepenthe, in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, is celebrating autumn by hosting a series of events at its cellar door in Balhannah.

The first, a very special one off “twilight tasting” is taking place on Friday 5 April from 5pm. Food will be matched with Nepenthe’s wines, so you’ll be able to try, for example, the 2010 Altitude Pinot Gris matched with sweet potato and avocado salsa on rye, and the 2012 Winemakers Cabernet Sauvignon matched with fig and roquefort tartlet. The tasting, of six wines, matched with six dishes, costs $35 per person and bookings are essential.

If a Friday night doesn’t work for you, the cellar door is also hosting sparkling high teas on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. Again, bookings are essential and tickets are $35 per person.

For more details, or to book, contact the winery by email, cellardoor@nepenthe.com.au, or by calling (08) 8398 8899.
